Written by Jeremy Stover, Chris Janson and Jamie Paulin, “How I’ll Always Be” finds McGraw musing about his down-home roots and preference for the simpler things in life: “I’m a little more bust your back than take it for free” and “I’m a little more ol’ Hank Williams than that trendy crap” are just a couple of the lines that he sings before the song’s first chorus.
“I’ll always be a fan of old stray dogs and guitars playin’ / One-room churches, backroad walks and front-porch swingin’,” McGraw goes on to admit in the chorus, accompanied by steel guitar, a quiet-but-prominent drum beat and a simple, mid-tempo melody. “Sunset skies, bonfire nights, I love the simple things / That’s how I’ll always be.”
